Chicago Bears quarterback Justin Fields is on the road towards forcing the franchise to make a major decision.

After stacking together two phenomenal passing performances against the Denver Broncos and the Washington Commanders, it turns out Fields' progression as a passer might be further along than we thought.

That news certainly throws a wrench into the Bears' long-term plans at the position. Armed with two first round picks in next year's draft (with both expecting to be Top-5 selections) the Bears looked prime to draft a new heir at the quarterback position.

Now, the Bears have two options placed in front of them. Should Fields stay or should he go? Option 1 has already been laid out, with the mindset being that the Bears should sell-high on Fields following his big games and get the most optimal return in a trade, while preparing to draft the team's next quarterback in April.

However, option 2 might seem to be more intriguing the more you dive into it.

Option 2: Keep Building Around Justin Fields

Two weeks ago, this seemed like a forgone conclusion for Bears fans. But now, after the last two weeks of the season, the idea has some merit.

Chicago tried to utilize that mindset going into the 2023 season by supplying Fields with two new playmakers in DJ Moore and Chase Claypool while spending top draft capital to support him up-front in right tackle Darnell Wright.

The Claypool trade completely blew up in general manager Ryan Poles' face but the Moore acquisition already looks like a home run. The last two weeks, Moore has completely transformed the Bears passing attack, quite literally single-handedly, and allowed Fields to finally show off his progression as a passing quarterback.

It's only been two weeks of offensive success, but what happens if that continues throughout the remainder of the season? I'm not suggesting the Bears use their momentum to go on some miraculous winning streak, but if Fields keeps putting together solid games on offense, the Bears have to reconsider their options.

Saying Fields keeps up the pace and continues to prove the league wrong, what does that mean for the 2024 draft. If he indeed shows he can be their guy long-term, then you have to keep building support around him.

Armed with that mindset, and their two first-round picks, the Bears opening night of the draft could look something like this: Trade back from the number one pick (if you have it) to allow another team to select a quarterback, draft Ohio State wide receiver Marvin Harrison Jr. and double-down on offense with your second pick by selecting Penn State offensive tackle Olu Fashanu.

Then, you enter into the offseason with a wide receiver room consisting of Moore and Harrison Jr. with the potential to sign another body in free agency. The offensive line will have three franchise cornerstones in Wright, Fashanu, and guard Teven Jenkins. Fields can then get a new contract offer to secure his future and the entire team will more than likely have a new (and hopefully offensive-minded) head coach.

On paper, this option also looks really appealing for the Bears, if Fields can keep showing improvements in his progression, which of course is a big if. However, if it comes to fruition, it's sometimes better to trust what you have than hope for something better to come from the unknown.

At the end of the day, the last thing Poles needs is another major move blowing up in his face, and he'll definitely have a major choice to make in the coming months.
