The full NFL Top 100 list was officially released late last week with Miami Dolphins star wide receiver Tyreek Hill claiming the top spot in the entire league.
The list was filled with a lot of controversy from top to bottom, but no player took more offense to the rankings than Chicago Bears Pro Bowl cornerback Jaylon Johnson.
After putting together the best season of his young career, Johnson was snubbed entirely from the Top-100 list, as was Bears wide receiver DJ Moore. The only members of the Bears roster who ultimately made the list were defensive end Montez Sweat and the new addition to the wide receiver room, Keenan Allen.
It wasn't just not being ranked that upset Johnson, it was also certain players who ended up being ranked above him on the league-wide list.
"It's bulls—," Johnson explained. "There ain't no way. I don't know how you make Pro Bowl, All-Pro and not [be voted] a Top 100 guy. I could've been 101 I guess, but Aaron Rodgers didn't even play in the season and he was voted."
Rodgers was voted 92nd on the list despite playing only four snaps during the 2023 season. However, the Top 100 is the top players going INTO in the 2024 season, not the top players from the previous season.
As for Johnson's guess that he might have been 101, that also wasn't the case. The NFL released the players who just missed the list that were instead voted 110-101, which didn't include Johnson nor Moore. The worst part is that quarterback Joe Flacco made the list at 107 after playing half a season and is currently serving as the backup for the Indianapolis Colts.
"It's disrespectful because I go out there, line up and I know receivers go out there and can't say that I'm not one of best players that they play against," Johnson added. "So I mean, whatever it is, it happened. Doing it wouldn't have moved me to where I'm complacent, but just to see it… ain't no way there are 100 guys who are better."
Johnson's right, he should have been included in the list but it's clear the voting system is somewhat flawed, even if it's voted on by the players.
"I mean, hey, everybody makes mistakes, it ain't just the media that do it," Johnson said. "Players clearly, if they voted for it, they made some mistakes. But it is what it is. At the end of the day I know the truth and it's all right, I got some more for them."
This just gives Johnson even more fuel going into the 2024 season after landing one of the top defensive back contracts this offseason.
Bears’ Jaylon Johnson projected to make an All-Pro leap following his 2023 breakout season
He certainly has what it takes.
