The discussion about Minnesota Vikings quarterback J.J. McCarthy has been all over the place. There are still a few who aren't believers but the majority believe in McCarthy and what he's been doing on the practice field.
Things haven't been perfect for the young rookie mainly due to consistency issues. That's normal for a quarterback just coming into the National Football League. That and the mechanical changes the franchise is working with him on will take time but are worth waiting for.
Is McCarthy the real deal? SKOR North's insider Darren Wolfson believes from both his eyes and what he's hearing from inside the building that he is.
"Is the real deal? I mean, we can at least have the discussion. I wasn't sure four weeks ago if we would have a legitimate discussion on August 6 about the possibility of JJ McCarthy starting week one, September 8 at the Giants. I think we're to the point where it's okay to talk about it now. I'm not as far ahead as some others in town suggesting that like, hey, like JJ had this, you know, however, you want to handicap it. You know, if he's gone from p+800 to, like, +125, or something like that, I'm not quite there. Like, yes. Sam Darnold, to me, is still the betting favorite. Something like, -240, -270 something like that. McCarthy, more like +300, maybe +400 but I'm just telling you three, four weeks ago, I would have had those odds like +800, +900 he gets it, and the fact he bounced back, you're right Phil. Struggled some on Friday, bounces back on Saturday that shows us enough. You talk to people behind the scenes, the way he is in meeting rooms, the way that he connects with his teammates. There is so much to like about JJ McCarthy. We know it's when the JJ McCarthy era begins. It's not an if, it's a when, I just don't know if it'll be September 8, but I'm telling you, everything I heard is positive. There are so many people so glad you ended up here (Minnesota)."
Wolfson isn't the only one to heap the praises onto McCarthy. Multiple people on the Vikings' beat have done just that. It's a great sign for the future of the franchise, but it's also smart to keep our expectations measured.
McCarthy still needs to become more consistent in his progressions as well as his mechanics. Being able to make throws is great, but being consistent is the most important aspect of playing the position.
