The biggest takeaway from the first week of Lions' training camp was that Brad Holmes made a big mistake and still has time to correct it

One of the biggest concerns that a lot of analysts have had about the Detroit Lions and their Super Bowl chances this offseason has been the team's receiving corps. The loss of Josh Reynolds, the teams number two receiver last year, was a big loss and there's been concerns with their depth.

So far we know that Amon-Ra St. Brown is the top guy and that Jameson Williams is looking like he's about to have a breakout year, but the drop off after that is pretty steep. Sure, Kalif Raymond will make the team and will play a role, but a lot of what he can do can be done by Williams, Jahmyr Gibbs and Sione Vaki.

Donovan Peoples-Jones was expected to possibly take that Josh Reynolds role because, in theory, he has a lot of the same skillset. As of now, there's a chance he won't even make the team. It's been that rough for him since OTAs and minicamp.

Guys like Maurice Alexander and Daurice Fountain have shown some stuff that could get them on the roster this year, but they haven't shown that they could be the teams' third receiver or anything like that. More like contributors that can play a lot on special teams.

This whole thing feels like a big mistake by Lions GM Brad Holmes, who had a chance to go out and get a receiver in the draft or in free agency and didn't do it because he felt confident about what the team had at the time. Now they're stuck in this spot where they have some serious concerns with depth and that third starting spot.

It's ok though since the Lions can correct this problem still and according to some comments from Holmes back in May, the Lions may be looking to add more receiver help during camp.

"That’s not saying that we won’t add. That’s a position that, especially when you get into camp, those guys put a lot of yardage on the field,” Holmes said. “So you always gotta at some point, you need to add a guy here or there when some attrition comes.”

They may need to look for someone that can do more than just be an extra man on the field though. The Lions are going to need to a find a receiver that can come in and help in a big way right away. That might mean a trade is the way they'll have to go. We'll see how things progress in the coming weeks, but right now the Lions need help.
