The Green Bay Packers made a surprising and wild decision back in March, deciding to release running back Aaron Jones after signing Josh Jacobs in free agency. For what is worth, Madden NFL ratings indicate that general manager Brian Gutekunst made the correct decision.

To be fair, it's a close call, and both made the top 10 among running backs. But Jacobs received an 89 overall rating, while Jones, who is now with the Minnesota Vikings, has an 88 rating.

As expected, San Francisco 49ers' Christian McCaffrey comes first, making the 99 club. The second place is surprising, with Nick Chubb coming off an injury. The Cleveland Browns' player still got a 96 overall rating.

New running back room

The Packers could have realistically kept both Jacobs and Jones, which would have been the best running back duo in the NFL by a significant margin. However, the decision to go young (Jacobs is three years younger) made a difference, especially because Jones has missed significant time with injuries.

Beyond Jacobs, the Packers can still have decent production from their backup running backs. AJ Dillon received a 78 rating, while rookie MarShawn Lloyd is at 73, and second-year back Emanuel Wilson is at 63.

Offense

So far, EA Sports has released the ratings of running backs and wide receivers on offense. Josh Jacobs is comfortably the best Packers player among these. The second is wide receiver Romeo Doubs at 79.

The receiving core is probably underrated, with all of the top 5 on the depth chart with ratings in the 70s: Doubs (79), Jayden Reed (78), Christian Watson (77), Dontayvion Wicks (75), and Bo Melton (73). The fact that AJ Dillon is as good as Reed and better than Watson and Wicks is notable — and questionable, to say the least.
