The Los Angeles Chargers released star center Corey Linsley on Wednesday. It came as no surprise. Linsley has been expected to retire.

The veteran lineman missed almost all of 2023 after being placed on the non-football illness list due to a heart condition. He told reporters in January that he was almost certainly going to retire because of the issue.

Linsley can carry some NFL history into his retirement

If Linsley retires, he finishes his NFL career with 1,572 straight pass block snaps without allowing a sack, including the playoffs (per PFF).

That's the longest active streak in the league. His last sack given up came in Week 10 of 2020, according to Doug Clawson.

For Linsley, it is a win-win situation. He gets to choose the safer route for his personal health and spend more time with his family. On the flip-side, some impressive, active NFL history gets to go along with him for the time being.

“The consummate professional, his mentorship of younger players, work ethic, integrity, leadership, competitive drive and sense of humor all played a role in earning him the ‘C’ on his jersey throughout the entirety of his time with us. And as good of a football player as he is, Corey’s an even better person. . . . While he has taken his last snap in the NFL, Corey’s story is far from being written. We cannot wait to see what the next chapter has in store for the Linsleys, and we wish Corey, Anna, Seamus, Killian, Quinn and Ruth all the best moving forward.”

— Chargers president of football operations John Spanos

Linsley was a fifth-round pick in 2014 for Green Bay. The OL joined the Chargers ahead of the 2021 season. He started all 144 games he played between the two franchises.

He was a three-year team captain in LA. Linsley also received multiple All-Pro and Pro Bowl honors throughout his NFL career.

Going out on a high note is a goal for many people. Linsley exemplifies that. He exits the pros as one of the top centers in football.
