The Red River Rivalry continues, even in the offseason. The Oklahoma Sooners earned the transfer portal commitment from 3-star defensive tackle Jermayne Lole, but Lole flipped before signing with the Sooners. Instead, the seventh-year senior is now a Texas Longhorn.
Lole immediately earned goodwill with the Longhorns faithful, saying, "I was on the wrong side of the Red River." The former Arizona State and Louisville starter has 141 tackles, 12.5 sacks, and 25 tackles for loss through 39 career games.
At 6-foot-2 and 310 pounds, Lole will immediately help a group of younger players who lost significant talent to the NFL after 2023. Incoming transfers Trey Moore and Tiaoalii Savea are expected to earn playing time right away, and Lole should also rotate in. The other notable incoming addition is former Clemson safety Andrew Mukuba.
The Longhorns' defense ranked 15th in points in 2023, propelling the team to the bring of a national title appearance. Rebuilding a unit that saw T'Vondre Sweat, Jaylan Ford, and Byron Murphy make the jump is a tall task. Lole, David Gbenda, and Jahdae Barron will be in the spotlight to replace the stars.
Lole's decision leaves Brett Venables and Oklahoma in a tough spot. Landing Damonic Williams in the transfer portal (which came at a huge NIL price) was huge, but the rest of the defensive front will rely on Ethan Downs, Danny Stutsman, and Jaren Kanak to headline a decent unit.
