Kansas City Chiefs first-round draft pick Xavier Worthy was present at the team's final OTAs practice of the week on Wednesday, but he wasn't among the players participating

Chiefs HC Andy Reid confirmed to reporters after practice that Worthy is sitting out of practice out of injury-related precaution. Worthy suffered a hamstring injury during Tuesday's practice and left early.

"No, he didn't practice today," Reid said. "He tweaked his hamstring the other day, so he didn't practice today. But what we saw was somebody that was smart, (he) understood what was being thrown at him. Then, somebody that can run pretty fast. We just basically got through the introduction stuff to him. He was only out there for a day and a half, but he got a nice introduction to things."

Anytime Reid describes an injury as a tweak, it's usually considered to be minor in nature. However, a speed receiver running into a hamstring injury certainly raises a bit of a red flag, Being cautious about rushing him back from this is the right call from the coaches and trainers, even if you'd like to get a better look at your first-round draft pick.

Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes sheds light on Worthy's injury situation

Mahomes was also asked about Worthy and what he saw from him ahead of the injury. He shed a bit of light on both the injury situation and his first impression of the rookie from the 1.5 days they got a chance to work together.

"You can tell how intelligent he is," Mahomes said. "He's asking the right questions. Before the hamstring thing, he was getting the work in. Sometimes it's tough for those guys coming off combine training, they want to prove what they can do Day 1 and little injuries like that happen. We're going to be precautionary right now, but he could probably get back out there if we really wanted him to. You can see him sitting right beside the guys, asking all the right questions. And when he does get back on the field I'm excited to get to work with him."

Ultimately, the Chiefs don't want to risk a lingering soft tissue injury over padless OTA practices in May. They want Worthy to be healthy for the team's mandatory minicamp in June and when training camp practices kick off in July. That's when they'll install the real foundation for the 2024 NFL season.
