Jordan Love had a promising first season as the Green Bay Packers starting quarterback, but it was far from flawless. Even though he had a good 2.6% turnover-worthy play rate throughout the season, he threw 10 picks between weeks 3 and 9 — he had only one pick in the other 10 games.
With much more tape and exposure, it's now easier to go back and see where Love can get better — and what type of practice he has to execute during the offseason to improve.
During OTAs, Jordan Love talked about two specific areas of the game that he has dedicated himself to over the offseason.
Pocket movements
Jordan Love was mostly solid from the pocket, but his footwork was not always very good. That led to some bad plays, and quicker movements can help facilitate the throws.
"There's always little things. I mean, the biggest thing for me is just staying poised in the pocket, being able to stay balanced in the pocket," Love mentioned. "Sometimes, I get out of a whack with my feet, I might start drifting in the pocket a little bit too much."
This interception against the Detroit Lions is a good example. He makes extra moves trying to read the defense quickly, that affects the timing of his throwing motion, and the ball probably goes shorter than he wanted to.
Against the New York Giants — the only interception Love threw after week 9 in the regular season —, Love could have done a better job with a quicker pocket movement as well.
"Just pocket awareness, making smaller moves," Love added. "And understanding when I might gotta get out of there."
Off-schedule throws
Jordan Love is a creative thrower in terms of arm angles and his fadeaway passes. But he can still get better identifying and executing plays outside of the pocket.
"Throwing on the run, being able to escape the pocket, and make those off-schedule plays is something I worked a good amount on," Love pointed out. "Just being comfortable, see the defense. Going back, watching that tape, seeing things I could have different, with picking up protections and things I wasn't doing earlier that I started being able to pick up on later in the season."
A play like Love described ended the Packers' season. Against the San Francisco 49ers in the divisional round of the playoffs, the quarterback threw across his body and was picked up by Dre Greenlaw.
Improvement
Having the possibility to evaluate his mistakes and work on them is a big part of how Jordan Love can get even better — and he will have to be, especially considering a likely scenario where he will receive a big contract extension.
Beyond that, the chemistry with the young group of receivers will certainly help.
"It's night and day," Love said about the work with his targets. "Last year, you had a lot of guys, young receivers, that were learning the playbook. The timing and chemistry is just not really there yet. We go out there today, and it's just night and day. Guys know exactly where they’re going to be. We have so much chemistry from last year and built up reps. It's definitely a big difference."
