San Francisco 49ers linebacker De'Vondre Campbell had a lot of things to say after being let go by the Green Bay Packers.

Campbell, a 2021 All-Pro who endured an extremely difficult final campaign with the Packers in 2023, blamed the defensive coaching staff for his drop-off in play, making clear his belief that former Green Bay defensive coordinator Joe Barry misused him.

And just one day into OTAs with the 49ers, it's evident Campbell is finding the grass much greener on the other side of an historic NFC rivalry, which the 49ers have dominated in recent years. Campbell's final game with the Packers came in the Divisional round of last season's NFC playoffs, which saw the 49ers erase a 21-14 fourth-quarter deficit to prevail 24-21.

In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Campbell wrote: "I can’t even lie I’m having so much fun playing football again… The situation I was in was making me lose my love for the game but I’m back having fun again and I love that for myself. Thank you God."

Having quickly caught heat from Packers fans for his comments, Campbell added: "Dang I can’t say nothing on here without yall getting upset lol. I love you all as well and I hope everyone is having a great and productive day."

Signed after the 49ers saw Eric Kendricks go back on a contract agreement, instead signing with the Dallas Cowboys, Campbell is likely to have ample opportunity to prove his struggles towards the end of his Packers career were the product of the situation he was in, rather than his own decline.

Campbell is the favorite to play the WILL linebacker role next to Fred Warner with Dre Greenlaw a significant doubt to be ready for the 49ers' season opener against the New York Jets having torn his Achilles in San Francisco's Super Bowl 58 loss to the Kansas City Chiefs.

If and when Greenlaw is deemed ready to return to the field, Campbell would likely shift to playing the SAM linebacker role on base downs.

Though it's early in his 49ers career, it would be no surprise if Campbell is already feeling right at home with San Francisco. He is very familiar with 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan, who was the Atlanta Falcons offensive coordinator when Campbell was drafted in 2016, and is playing in a defense that at its core is the same one he entered when he came into the league as a fourth-round pick.

At its best, the 49ers' defense is a fast and aggressive unit that plays downhill and flies to the ball. That should suit Campbell perfectly and, with the excellent Warner wearing the green dot and consistently ensuring he and his teammates are in the right place to make the play, Campbell should be able to enjoy a freedom he clearly didn't feel he had in Green Bay.

It's very early in the league year, but Campbell obviously already feels he made the right decision in signing for San Francisco, and his satisfaction can only be a good thing for the 49ers.
