Drake Maye showed impressive improvement from his first practice to his second. And that included one pass that caught everyone's attention on Wednesday.
After a disappointing quarterback performance last season, the New England Patriots knew they needed to make some major changes. They traded Mac Jones to the Jacksonville Jaguars and took former University of North Carolina quarterback Drake Maye with the No. 3 overall pick.
And fans were excited to see what Maye had in store as he took the field for OTAs.
On Wednesday, Maye did his best Patrick Mahomes impression, firing off the perfect no-look pass during practice.
Mahomes is arguably the best player in the National Football League right now and will go down as one of the top quarterbacks in history. So for Maye to get compared to him is very promising, even if it's just based on this throw.
And the Patriots can truly utilize this trick from Maye during the season. So receivers will have to be ready at all times.
Drake Maye's Performance at Wednesday's OTAs
11v11s
Maye: 4/6
Jacoby Brissett: 6/8
Bailey Zappe: 6/9
7v7s
Maye: 12/14
Jacoby Brissett: 7/7
Bailey Zappe: 4/7, INT
With Joe Milton III being absent, the other three quarterbacks got increased reps. However, Brissett went first, followed by Zappe, and then Maye was last.
While he didn't get as many reps during 11v11s, during 7v7s, Brissett and Zappe were together on one field and split the reps. On the other field, Maye was doing it all and got to truly show off for an extended period of time.
During the 7s period, Maye had some plays that stood out.
- Maye hit Tyquan Thornton along the sidelines with a nice placed ball JuJu-Smith Schuster made a diving catch on a ball thrown by Maye
- Maye hit T.J. Luther with a perfectly placed ball, getting the ball right to his hands despite the tight coverage
There is still a long way to go and it's way too early to truly assess if Maye will be ready once the season rolls around. But he's making a solid first impression among the team and the fanbase.
So maybe there will be more no-look passes in the future.
