After missing the first week of organized team activities (OTAs) at Halas Hall, Chicago Bears' first round pick Rome Odunze appears to be back in action at practice.
The Bears held a closed practice on Tuesday and Wednesday this week but posted a highlight video on social media today showing Odunze catching passes from Caleb Williams, the team's first overall pick, in live drills against the team's defense.
This is big news for the Bears considering it's something we weren't able to see last week during the one day of media access on Thursday.
Odunze was held out of the majority of the first week of OTAs after experiencing some hamstring soreness that occurred weeks ago during the team's rookie minicamp. After speaking to the media on Thursday, head coach Matt Eberflus noted that the team would ramp Odunze up this week, and that's since been confirmed.
Based on the highlight clip released by the team's social media account, Odunze was lined up on the right outside of the formation and was covered by second-year cornerback Tyrique Stevenson on the play. Odunze had a step on Stevenson but it was still tight coverage and Williams was able to hit his new target perfectly in stride.
Another hidden detail on the play showed newly signed running back D'Andre Swift coming out of the backfield and running a route in the passing game, showing off his dual threat ability that is being worked on in practice.
From what I could tell based on this one play, right tackle Darnell Wright was also back on the field after not being seen at practice last Thursday. However, Matt Pryor was seen blocking defensive lineman Khalid Kareem at right guard, potentially meaning that Nate Davis was once again not at practice on that day.
Nevertheless, this is the first big play we've seen from the Bears' first two draft picks in action against the team's starting defense on the field. More is sure to come and hopefully we get some more public highlights during tomorrow's practice which will be open to the media.
