The 2024 NFL Draft is now roughly just one week away, and one of the most-watched prospects in the event will be former LSU quarterback Jayden Daniels.
After catching some attention at Arizona State before he ultimately faltered in the Sun Devils offense, Daniels experienced a new revival with a change of scenery when he transferred to LSU ahead of the 2022 season. There, Daniels went from flying under the radar to a player widely recognized as one of the best quarterbacks in the nation as he completed 68.6% of his passes for 2,913 yards with 17 touchdowns and 3 interceptions during his first season in Baton Rouge.
He built upon that in 2023 when he posted a completion rate of 72.2%, tossing for 3,812 yards with 40 touchdowns and 4 interceptions en route to winning the Heisman Trophy.
Here's a look into three landing spots that make sense for Daniels and what he could be walking into as he takes the next step in his career as an early first-round prospect.
1. Washington Commanders.
There's been a lot of buzz surrounding Daniels headed to the Commanders as largely the favorite odds-on landing spot for the former LSU signal caller at pick No. 2 overall. This would also mean that the Commanders elected to not trade this pick away to a team that would be looking to take a quarterback early.
"With them, it was just how cool the whole staff was," Daniels said at the NFL Scouting Combine of the Commanders. "Obviously Dan Quinn, Kliff Kingsbury and all those types of guys. Just being able to sit in there and get to know people. You see them on TV and see everybody coaching. Behind the scenes, to be able to just have a conversation, that's just the coolest part for me."
Given that Daniels' ceiling is as a true dual-threat quarterback, his vast skillset could pair well with what Kliff Kingsbury likes to do offensively and he will be instantly met with a solid supporting cast. On paper, this could be a quite favorable situation for Daniels out of the gate.
2. Minnesota Vikings.
The Vikings, who hold the No. 11 overall pick, need their quarterback of the future following the departure of veteran passer Kirk Cousins. The Vikings did recently sign veteran former first-round selection Sam Darnold, but all signs point to the team not being sold on him.
There's hardly chance Daniels will be available in the first spot the Vikings are picking in, so trading up will be a necessity for the team to secure him.
Minnesota has displayed plenty of interest in Daniels, with the Vikings brass set to meet with Daniels in Baton Rouge on Thursday.
Like the Commanders, the Vikings also offer a soft landing spot for Daniels in terms of a talented supporting cast between wide receivers Justin Jefferson and Jordan Addison, tight end T.J. Hockenson and running back Aaron Jones.
3. New England Patriots.
The Patriots have found themselves in a bit of a pickle at quarterback, still in limbo at the position as they work out the kinks that have existed since Tom Brady's departure (and eventual retirement).
A different type of quarterback like Daniels would be intriguing for the Patriots, who have utilized more traditional pocket passers like Mac Jones and Bailey Zappe recently with little luck.
Unlike some of the other aforementioned landing spots, Daniels won't be in as advantageous of a situation with the pieces he'll be surrounded by in New England. The Patriots are in the midst of a rebuild with a new coaching staff and the fact wide receivers DeMario Douglas, Kendrick Bourne and K.J. Osborn make up the better part of the team's top pass-catchers doesn't exactly scream "impressive."
"It would be dope," Daniels said at the NFL Scouting Combine of potentially suiting up for the Patriots. "Obviously growing up and seeing what Tom Brady did there, six Super Bowls. That's tough to live up to. It would be dope to come in there, seeing the success they had and help them get back on track."
