Back in 2022, the San Francisco 49ers' contract negotiations with Deebo Samuel reached a point where the wide receiver requested a trade. As yet, talks with Brandon Aiyuk have not reached that point.
Aiyuk's agent confirmed as such, denying fanciful social media speculation about the 2023 second-team All-Pro asking for a trade.
Responding to post on X (formerly Twitter) claiming Aiyuk had requested a trade, his agent Ryan Williams wrote: "You need better sources."
It was reported this week that Aiyuk had unfollowed the 49ers on his social media accounts, a typical and consistently meaningless step taken by players in modern day contract negotiations. As yet, though, that has not proven a precursor to any demand for a move to a new team.
Speculation has swirled about the future of the 49ers' leading receiver, who is set to play on his fifth-year option, and will likely continue to do so until a contract extension is signed.
But San Francisco general manager John Lynch has been consistent in insisting the Niners intend to keep Aiyuk around for the long term, denying talk that they have been involved in any trade conversations concerning the 2020 first-round pick. Head coach Kyle Shanahan has also expressed confidence in getting a deal done with Aiyuk.
With the NFL Draft under two weeks away, time is running out for any team that wants to move the 49ers off that stance with an offer that proves too good to refuse.
The Niners would almost certainly want a 2024 first-round pick in any deal for Aiyuk in order to put themselves in the best possible spot to replace him effectively.
Once the draft passes, the overwhelming likelihood will be that Aiyuk puts pen to paper on a deal that will keep him with the Niners through his prime years and makes him one of the highest-paid receivers in football.
