It's almost July and the Dallas Cowboys still haven't signed quarterback Dak Prescott to a new contract.
They also haven't locked in star wide receiver CeeDee Lamb or star defensive end Micah Parsons.
And the longer Dallas waits to do so, then the more they will have to spend. That's why ESPN's Aaron Schultz is urging the Cowboys to get those deals done as their final move(s) before training camp kicks off at the end of July.
"I'm not sure what the Cowboys are waiting for. The longer they wait to extend these important players, the more expensive those contracts become as other players (such as wide receiver Justin Jefferson) get paid and raise the bar at those positions. This isn't the place to have a long debate about Prescott's struggles in the postseason and whether he's truly worth a top-money quarterback contract. But nobody out there is going to argue against the idea that Lamb and Parsons are at or near the top of their positions and deserve extensions. The Cowboys wouldn't want to let these players leave. So get on it!"
Lamb has made it clear that he's not too happy about the waiting game and did not show up to OTAs or mandatory minicamp. Meanwhile, Prescott and Parsons have been very patient.
According to last week's report from ESPN's Jeremy Fowler, the Cowboys are prioritizing Prescott over both Lamb and Parsons, though there still hasn't been a lot of progress.
Even if the Cowboys could go ahead and sign at least one of their stars sooner rather than, then they would be helping themselves. There's also no rush on Parsons and they could even wait until next offseason for that extension and lean into Lamb and Prescott for now.
But every day they wait to make a deal, the are only putting themselves in a bind as other stars across the league ink their new deals, giving these three Cowboys a lot more leverage to work with.
