Will Levis had an up and down rookie season for the Tennessee Titans. He started out with a bang against the Falcons, throwing four touchdowns in Week 7. But then he threw just four touchdowns for the rest of the season after that. The fanbase and national media were left torn on Levis, many actually believing that he wasn't ever going to be a good NFL starter. But then Titans general manager Ran Carthon began to build around him.
This offseason the Titans completely revamped their offensive line, the secondary, and added both Calvin Ridley and Tyler Boyd at wide receiver to go along with DeAndre Hopkins' future Hall of Fame talents. The pieces surrounding Will Levis look a whole better going into year two. However, Levis has still struggled at times this spring in OTAs and minicamp. Should Titans fans be worried? Not according to one new Titans wide receiver, Tyler Boyd.
Tyler Boyd confident in Will Levis and offensive weapons for Titans
When I talked with Tyler Boyd at Titans minicamp he spoke extensively about Brian Callahan's offense since he spent five years playing in it. He spoke about how much timing and specific player fits goes into it, and how it just takes time to learn and get the offense on the same page. Boyd didn't seem worried at all about Will Levis or the offense gelling together, unlike some local and national media.
Then on Monday June 10, he took it a step further in an interview with SiriusXM NFL Radio (as you can watch in the video post below):
"I know he can go out there and play football…And I know he kind of probably went out there and [tried to do] too much. But now he's got playmakers. He's got guys. So [Will Levis] can cut it back a little bit, relax, and just rely more on his playmakers."
Boyd seems incredibly confident, not only in Levis, but in himself and the playmakers the Titans now have all on the same offense. Levis likely did feel at times last season that he had to "do too much" in order for the team to find success. That shouldn't be the case once he gets fully up to speed with the new offense and weapons at his disposal.
"He's still learning the offense as well, you know, so he's still trying to get the timing, certain routes, and knowing which side to stay with and not to stay with, and just [getting] the ball out and timing…the most important thing for the whole group is just to be unselfish. Making it more of a family thing and not just being selfish."
When I've been present with other A to Z Sports media members at OTAs and minicamp it's been clear that Levis is still learning, experimenting, and getting to know his new receivers. It may take some time, even well into training camp for Levis to get truly comfortable, but once he does Boyd is likely right. This is the best trio of wide receivers the Titans have had in a long time, perhaps the best in franchise history. This offense will get right. And when it does, Levis should start playing like the weapon at quarterback he can be.
