After Kansas City Chiefs DT Chris Jones signed his new record-setting five-year contract back in March, he told reporters that nothing could change his love and passion for the game of football. That remains the case ahead of his age-30 season. He's as passionate about the game as ever before.
With talks of retirement dominating the conversation surrounding Chiefs HC Andy Reid and TE Travis Kelce this offseason, Jones was inexplicably asked if retirement is something he ever pondered. This came after Kelce was pelted with a few questions about his future during Tuesday's media availability and admitted he was closer to the end of his career than he was to the beginning.
Jones was genuinely shocked to learn that anyone had even been asking Kelce about it lately.
"What the hell," Jones exclaimed to reporters. "Like, he's retiring this year? What do you mean?"
After a little clarification, Jones explained that retirement is something that will happen when it happens. The 2016 NFL draft pick aims to keep those thoughts far out of his mind.
"Listen, I don't think about it, man," Jones said. "Once you think about those types of things you feed those thoughts. I don't want my mind to even go that far to the "R" word."
Jones also thinks that his teammate might be wise to learn from him on that. He feels that Kelce has plenty of years of playing football ahead of him and insists that the two should retire together.
"But Trav, he's —-ing pretty old," Jones joked. "I'm just playin' Trav, I love you. But, no, Trav has got like four or five more years left. What has he been talking about retirement for? I mean, you know, we can't let TK-Soul go. It's like, if we retire, we've got to retire together. Give me like at least six more years, then we'll talk about it."
There you have it. We're getting four to six more years of Travis Kelce if Chris Jones has anything to do with it. Hopefully, this is the end of all retirement talk surrounding the Chiefs for the remainder of the offseason and we'll only hear about it again eight months from now, and get the same answers.
