The Kansas City Chiefs are set to add a potential hidden gem that they've been flirting with signing for over the last month.

The Chiefs hosted Montana DT Alex Gubner as an undrafted free agent tryout during the team's rookie minicamp in early May. The only tryout player signed following that practice session was Villanova WR Jaaron Hayek. Gubner still apparently made an impression on the coaching staff in Kansas City, though.

Gubner was invited back as one of four tryout players in attendance during mandatory minicamp this past week. As first reported by KC Star reporter Sam McDowell, the Chiefs have signed Gubner to a deal following the past week of practices.

In a corresponding move to make room for Gubner, the Chiefs released P Ryan Rehkow, which means that Matt Araiza is the winner of their punter battle.

Here's what Chiefs fans need to know about Gubner

Gubner was a highly productive player for the Montana Grizzlies during his college career. Over the past four seasons in Missoula, he recorded a whopping 124 total tackles, 28.5 tackles for loss, 10.5 sacks, eight pass deflections, a forced fumble, and a blocked kick. He's listed at 6-foot-4 and 285 pounds, which is slight for an interior defensive lineman, but gives him some versatility and flexibility to kick outside.

Last season, Gubner earned consensus All-American honors and was named the Big Sky Defensive Player of the Year for his performance, becoming the first defensive lineman from Montana to do so. He was part of a defense in 2023 that allowed just 108.5 rushing yards per game and allowed third-down conversions less than 30% of the time. He played a big part in both those numbers as a stout run-defender and dominant force rushing the passer.
