The Stetson Bennett – Brock Bowers connection that worked so nicely at Georgia almost made its way to the Los Angeles Rams, but that plan ultimately did not pan out.
There were multiple reports flying around that Los Angeles was considering trading up for Bowers in Round 1, though the team never did reach a deal with another squad that allowed them to move up from No. 19 overall to acquire the Georgia product.
In a new show from NFL Films and Roku titled “NFL Draft: The Pick Is In” that was just released on Friday, the Rams' attempt to trade up for Bowers, in addition to Texas defensive tackle Byron Murphy II, is detailed.
As it turns out, Rams GM Les Snead and head coach Sean McVay called nearly every team picking within the top 10 selections about trading up. They were turned down.
The Rams opened the day with Bowers, Murphy, and defensive linemen Jared Verse and Braden Fiske on their mind.
Los Angeles made an offer to trade picks No. 19 and No. 52 to the Jets for No. 10, but GM Joe Douglas did not go for the idea of moving down that many spots in the first round.
Then Los Angeles attempted to strike a deal with the Minnesota Vikings as McVay made a call to head coach Kevin o'Connell, who previously served as the Rams offensive coordinator. That didn't work out either, as O'Connell revealed the team's intent to take former Michigan quarterback J.J. McCarthy. The Vikings would go on to trade up one spot to secure the signal-caller.
NFL insider Ari Meirov further dissected the situation that faced the Rams and their numerous attempts to climb the picking order:
Bowers ultimately landed with the Las Vegas Raiders at pick No. 13 overall, and there's no doubt he'll instantly elevate the passing game there. But it's interesting to think about what could have been down the line if there were a scenario in which Bennett and Bowers could have taken the field together.
For now, that will remain nothing more than a pipe dream that came closer to fruition than some may have imagined.
