Has anyone else noticed this, or is just us here at A to Z Detroit? There seems to be this pipeline that's going directly from the Detroit Lions to the Canadian province of British Columbia. Here's what we mean by this.
The Lions brought in two players from British Columbia this year. The first was BC Lions standout Mathieu Betts. He just won the CFL's Most Outstanding Defensive Player award last season after getting 18 sacks in one year.
Lions head coach Dan Campbell recently said that Betts has more versatility than he even realized. There's a chance we could be seeing him on the 53-man roster this year and he could be playing a role.
Then the Lions traded up in the fourth-round of this years draft to select tackle Giovanni Manu from the University of British Columbia. He's expected to be a big part of the Lions future on their offensive line.
The door is going the other way too. The BC Lions currently have three former Detroit Lions on their roster and all of them are contributing in some way.
Receiver Travis Fulgham is someone that we've already talked about. He's making a comeback after a short absence from football. He had a big Week 1 game for the Lions this season. Week 2 was not so good though.
Then there's Christian Covington. His stay with the Lions wasn't a super long one, but he was with Detroit last season and he had a big game for the BC Lions this past weekend.
A pretty cool moment. By the way, if you're not watching the CFL right now, you should. It's fun and there's already a built in team for you to cheer for without feeling like you're stretching your vocabulary. You can still say "go Lions!"
The third player is receiver Stanley Berryhill. He was with the Lions in 2022 and showed some promise on the practice squad and was active a couple times too. There was some thought that he could carve out a role on the 53-man roster in 2023 and then he was suspended by the NFL for sports betting. When Jameson Williams suspension got lifted, Stanley Berryhill's did too, but the Lions didn't bring him back. Now he's in the CFL with the BC Lions.
Could that pipeline continue? Will the Detroit Lions look to British Columbia for players again? The earliest we could find out would be in December when CFL players are permitted to sign with NFL teams.
