The dominant storyline of the San Francisco 49ers offseason took an unexpected turn on Monday.

All-Pro wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk is still yet to receive a contract extension from the 49ers, with their impasse showing little sign of ending after the 2020 first-round pick skipped OTAs and mandatory minicamp.

After those not unexpected decisions, Aiyuk began this week by making a more surprising one to post a video to TikTok in which he tells close friend and Washington Commanders quarterback Jayden Daniels that the 49ers "said they don’t want me back".

Such a claim immediately seemed dubious given the 49ers have said publicly that they want to sign Aiyuk to a long-term deal and have been reported to have offered him a deal that would pay him $26 million annually.

NFL teams are, of course, capable of changing their mind. However, such an about-face from the 49ers would be stunning considering Aiyuk's importance to the offense and to Brock Purdy.

And, speaking about Aiyuk's claims on NFL Network's 'The Insiders', NFL Media insider Ian Rapoport quickly refuted the wide receiver's suggestion.

Rapoport said:

"They do want him. They just want him at their price. It is not a negotiation to my knowledge that has been completely dead. They just have not done a deal yet and it's pretty clear that Brandon Aiyuk wants the kind of money that Amon-Ra St. Brown ended up making, about $28 million average over the first three years of his deal, the 49ers are not there yet. They like him. They really like him. They just have not been able to come together on a deal so maybe that's kind of the feeling that Brandon Aiyuk was trying to give out."

Rapoport is probably right on the money that the publication of the video was simply Aiyuk trying to vent a little of his frustration.

The 49ers have over $30 million in cap space following the Christian McCaffrey extension and can easily bridge the gap between their offer and Aiyuk's demands. Still, with around a month or so until training camp (the 49ers have yet to confirm a start date), they don't need to rush to do so and can use the time they have to thrash out the finer details of the contract to get it to their liking.

But the calm the 49ers front office likely feels is sure to be in marked contrast to Aiyuk's emotions right now. Unfortunately for him, the 49ers' track record says it's unlikely the video will force them to move any quicker.
