Back in January, everything fell down for the Cleveland Browns and they lost to the Houston Texans in the playoffs. It still was a pretty special season for the Browns who had no business being there with all of the injuries that piled up. That is the exact reason that the NFL named Kevin Stefanski Coach of the Year for the second time.
None of that matters though, the only thing that matters now is the 2024 season and the Browns are less than a month from beginning training camp. For this season to be a successful one for the Browns, a couple of things specifically have to happen.
Browns need to win a playoff game and make a push for the AFC Championship
Getting to the playoffs last season with five different quarterbacks starting a game for Cleveland was quite an accomplishment. They didn’t have Nick Chubb past Week 2 and they lost both offensive tackles by the end of the season, as well as Dawand Jones who came in and looked the part.
The loss to the Texans in the playoffs was not the big issue with how the season went. Losing by a score of 45-14 and the collapse by the defense was the issue. Cleveland’s defense failed to play well on the road but was dominant at home, it needs to be more level in 2024.
Cleveland’s schedule is tougher in 2024 and getting to the playoffs will be tougher. However, they have one of the best rosters in the NFL and the current regimen is heading into its fifth season. The expectation should be for the Browns to win a playoff game like they did in 2020 and to make a push for the AFC Championship.
Deshaun Watson finally has to show he was worth the trade
Cleveland has not got the bang for their buck when it comes to the trade they made for Watson and that is no secret. The Browns sent three first-round picks plus three additional picks to the Houston Texans and since then they have had Watson out there 12 games in two seasons. Between the suspension and then injury in 2023, Watson’s start with the Browns has been a headache more than anything.
The Browns are tied to Watson for the next couple of years because they’re not taking the boatload of dead cap that it would take to cut him. The fully guaranteed contract isn’t an issue right now but if year No. 3 goes bad then it could be a bigger issue.
Cleveland has surrounded Watson with a ton of help and new offensive minds to get this thing right. He is going to be ready to go in Week 1 and a fast start could be huge for the trajectory of Watson’s career.
