The Kansas City Chiefs have finally done it. It took them a while, but they have finally found their next Tyreek Hill. After trading up in the first round with the Buffalo Bills general manager Brett Veach and the Chiefs selected former Texas Longhorns wide receiver, Xavier Worthy. The move now gives the Chiefs the electric playmaker that they have sorely been missing for two years.
Xavier Worthy is–in case you have forgotten–the wide receiver who just broke the all-time NFL Combine record in the forty-yard dash. His 4.21-second forty makes him perhaps even faster than the Cheetah (Tyreek Hill) himself. But is he more than just speed? And how does he fit with Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs offense?
Xavier Worthy, WR Texas
Xavier Worthy showed up to Texas as a true freshman and put together one of the most special seasons for an 18-year-old first year wide receiver in all of college football history. He caught 62 receptions for just shy of 1000 yards and 12 receiving touchdowns as a true freshman for the Longhorns. While those raw totals don't sound too crazy on the surface, Worthy accounted for 37% of his teams receiving yards and over 40% of their receiving touchdowns. Those marks are elite even for final year wide receivers entering the draft. He did it at age 18.
I asked him about his special breakout season at the NFL Combine and this is what he had to say:
"It was my 'want to' and my drive…I was always told when I was younger that I was too small [and] couldn't do it. So it was just like my 'want to' and my drive."
Xavier Worthy has always had a chip on his shoulder dating back to his early days as a high school football recruit. There were always size questions throughout his career and for much of this NFL Draft cycle, but when he broke the forty-yard dash record those subsided for the most part. And for good reason.
As you can see in the post below, Xavier Worthy is much more than just his speed. He wins with technicality, nuance, elite agility, and body control.
Worthy may still just be 165 pounds, but in today's NFL, with his speed, route running ability, and easy separation on any kind of route he shouldn't have any problem stepping right in and finding success. But how does he fit with the Chiefs? And can he really be the next Tyreek Hill for them?
Xavier Worthy fit with the Chiefs
The truth is, nobody is Tyreek Hill. He's one of one. But if any wide receiver in the 2024 NFL Draft class (or any class for that matter) was going to come into the NFL and find success in a similar role it was going to be Xavier Worthy.
The Chiefs did find a good receiver in Rashee Rice last season, but he didn't bring game-breaking speed and just found himself in some off-field trouble. The team did sign Marquise "Hollywood" Brown this offseason, but he's only on a one-year deal. Travis Kelce isn't getting any younger. The team needed to find their future at the position and Xavier Worthy will be exactly that.
Worthy likely steps into the exact role that Tyreek played a few short years ago. Expect a lot of pre-snap motion looks, free releases, vertical stem work from every pre-snap position, and quick-hitting underneath YAC opportunities for him to utilize his otherworldly speed.
If the immediate responses from several of his new teammates (as you can see in the post below) are any indication, Xavier Worthy is about to become the focal point of the Chiefs offense right away.
