It was no secret that the Washington Commanders were going to draft a tackle on Day 2 of the NFL Draft. It was just a matter of when and who.
That guy ended up being former TCU tackle, Brandon Coleman. Commanders GM Adam Peters took him with the 67th overall pick, a third-rounder, which also represented the team's first pick of the third round.
The Commanders reportedly tried to trade back into the first round in order to draft former Oklahoma tackle, Tyler Guyton, on Thursday night, but couldn't do so. After taking defensive lineman Jer'Zhan "Johnny" Newton, defensive back Mike Sainristil, and H-back Ben Sinnott – Coleman is the Commanders' fourth Day 2 pick.
Overall, Coleman needs to improve his technical consistency, but his ease of movement, spatial awareness and length are the building blocks that offensive line coaches covet. He has the traits to stay outside at tackle while also offering position flexibility at guard. – Dane Brugler, The Athletic
He will compete against veterans Andrew Wylie and Cornelius Lucas, and 2022 fourth-rounder Braeden Daniels for one of the starting tackle jobs, although it will most likely be contained to Lucas and Daniels on the let side. But the interesting thing, as Brugler mentions, is Coleman could end up fighting for a job on the inside of the offensive line.
Either way, the Commanders offensive line has a plan and direction for the 2024 season. That in itself is a big deal as the team tries to create an infrastructure that not only allows franchise QB Jayden Daniels to hit the ground running – it allows him to have sustained success for the foreseeable future.
