Dan Quinn was the Seattle Seahawks defensive coordinator at the height of the 'Legion of Boom' era, when Bobby Wagner was at the heart of a defense that went to two successive Super Bowls, winning the first.
Now the two will work together again after Wagner agreed to a one-year deal with the Washington Commanders, with whom Quinn is getting his second shot as a head coach over three years on from the end of his time running the Atlanta Falcons.
Per NFL Media's Ian Rapoport, Wagner is signing a one-year deal with the Commanders with a maximum value of $8.5 million. The contract includes $6 million in guarantees.
The move also sees Wagner reunite with his former linebacker coach and another ex-Seahawks defensive coordinator in Ken Norton Jr.
Norton is now the linebacker coach for the Commanders.
Wagner is the second linebacker signed by the Commanders during the free agency period, following Frankie Luvu, who signed a three-year deal after another impressive season with the Carolina Panthers.
They will likely start on base downs alongside Washington's 2021 first-round pick Jamin Davis, with Luvu the leading candidate to come off the field on nickel downs.
A nine-time Pro Bowler who was named second-team All-Pro for his efforts with the Seahawks last season, Wagner will be under immediate pressure to demonstrate his pedigree with the Commanders, Washington's defense having ranked 32nd in points and yards last season.
Quinn's previous partnership with Wagner proved extremely fruitful. Their reunion isn't likely the same dividends any time soon, but the Commanders will be delighted if they can get another Pro Bowl season from Wagner that gets their defense on an upward trajectory.
