Talk of the San Francisco 49ers potentially landing Joey Bosa to pair with his younger brother Nick had percolated in recent weeks with the Los Angeles Chargers facing a challenge to become salary cap compliant and with the elder Bosa due a $7 million roster bonus on Friday.
But the Chargers, who got under the cap by cutting Mike Williams, won't be releasing the 2016 third overall pick, nor will they be trading him to the 49ers, with ESPN's Adam Schefter reporting Los Angeles had agreed to a contract restructure that will allow him to stay with the team.
It means mother Cheryl Bosa won't get her wish of seeing Joey and Nick play together. She recently made a very public plea for that to happen in a post on her Instagram story.
Instead she will have to be content with watching Joey play for former 49ers head coach Jim Harbaugh after he returned to the NFL to coach the Chargers.
The Bosa brothers have never even played against each other in the NFL. Joey was injured when the 49ers beat the Chargers in Week 10 of the 2022 season
San Francisco has already made significant changes to its defensive line in free agency. With defensive tackles Arik Armstead (released for salary cap savings) and Javon Kinlaw, who signed with the New York Jets, departing. Defensive ends Chase Young and Randy Gregory remain on the open market while Clelin Ferrell signed with the Washington Commanders.
The 49ers quickly made moves to fortify both the interior and the edge of the defensive line. They signed Jordan Elliott, formerly of the Cleveland Browns, and traded with the Houston Texans for Maliek Collins to replace Armstead and Kinlaw. On the edge, they signed veteran Leonard Floyd and took a bet on the potential of former Carolina Panthers pass rusher Yetur Gross-Matos.
A move for Joey Bosa would have made an already fearsome front even more formidable, but instead the 49ers will likely look to use one of their 10 picks in next month's draft to add further depth to a position that has long since been an area of strength.
