A couple of Tennessee Vols assistant coaches were praised this week for their recruiting efforts in the all-important Atlanta recruiting area.

The Athletic asked high school coaches in Atlanta who recruits the area the best and a couple of Vols assistants, along with Tennessee head coach Josh Heupel, were mentioned.

Georgia head coach Kirby Smart was unsurprisingly the most popular answer when asked which sitting head coach recruits Atlanta the best (Athens is just an hour away), but Heupel was mentioned by several high school coaches, too. One coach noted that Heupel is "fantastic" with another coach pointing out that Heupel "does a good job" in Atlanta and is in the area often.

New Vols running backs coach De'Rail Sims was specifically pointed out by one high school coach as an assistant who recruits extremely well in Atlanta.

"De’Rail Sims, who is now at Tennessee. Brian Jean-Mary was doing a great job (at Tennessee), but he’s at Michigan now. Hopefully, they keep Sims in our area because he does a phenomenal job," said one high school coach.

"Willie Martinez from Tennessee has been incredible," noted another high school coach. "He used to be at Georgia, so he knows the area well and knows it’s a good spot to be. He always takes time to talk to you, get to know you and make you feel at home."

Vols defensive line coach Rodney Garner was also pointed out as a Tennessee assistant who does a good job in Atlanta.

Several of the the high school coaches that spoke with The Athletic pointed out Tennessee as one of the out-of-state programs that does the best job in Atlanta.

"Tennessee has always been one that comes in and makes Georgia a priority," said one high school coach.

"Tennessee, those guys do a great job," added another high school coach.

There's a significant amount of talent in the Atlanta area. And the city is just three hours away from Knoxville. Tennessee is wise to make having a presence in Atlanta a priority. And it seems clear that the Vols' recruiting efforts in Atlanta are appreciated.
