NASHVILLE — With the signing of wide receiver Calvin Ridley to a four-year, $92 million contract, the Tennessee Titans are getting a star wide receiver with the personality to match.

Ridley immediately won over the fanbase and media during his introductory press conference on Tuesday by displaying both candor and confidence.

As Titans fans know, star wide outs with a relatable and likable disposition are not always easy to find. But with Tennessee dawning on a new era of Titans football, a talented and charismatic receiver might be the best thing to happen to this fanbase since A.J. Brown.

A.J. Brown with the Titans

While I did not have the opportunity to cover A.J. Brown during his time in Tennessee, Brown's energy was one that left a lasting impression on those surrounding him. I asked some of my media colleagues who both covered and got to know Brown well for one word to describe his personality.

Some of the words I got back? "Authentic", "electric", "confident", "honest", and "fiery." Through the good times and bad, Brown was unapologetically himself.

Brown was the unicorn that every NFL fanbase covets, only a select few get, and Titans fans had been previously deprived of for over a decade – a star wide receiver who was charismatic, relatable, and loved being a Tennessee Titan. Before Brown was selected to the Pro Bowl in 2020, the last Titans wide receiver to do so was Derrick Mason in 2003.

It's no wonder why Brown, in a city that was already starstruck by the Hall of Fame career of Derrick Henry, became an instant star. For those same reasons, the trade that sent him to the Philadelphia Eagles in 2022 cut the fanbase even deeper.

That trade has been a dark cloud hanging over the organization ever since. But both Jon Robinson and Mike Vrabel are gone. Ran Carthon and Brian Callahan are in. The Titans are redefining their identity and as they do so, they have acquired a wide receiver in Ridley that can be what Titans fans have missed about Brown.

Calvin Ridley's introduction

All of the words used to describe A.J. Brown could also be used to summarize Ridley's introductory press conference with Titans media on Friday. Ridley came off as very authentic and honest, even when faced with difficult questions.

"I'm a very honest person so this interview's hard for me. I'm very honest," Ridley said while reflecting on his time with the Jacksonville Jaguars. "[I was] just a little uncomfortable at times, but [the Titans] showed me they want me here for a while. They told me already that they're going to treat me like a grown man."

At other times throughout his 19 minutes at the podium, Ridley opened up about his gambling suspension, his time away from football, and the importance of family in his life. He was not afraid to be vulnerable. He was not afraid to crack a joke.

I usually find that players who are honest and vulnerable tend to be more confident. When someone is secure in their abilities and character, there is a certain frankness that naturally follows. Confidence is not an area that Ridley is lacking. I think that's a good thing.

"I had two years off and came back and got 1,000 yards. I had two seasons off. I'm a hard worker. I play football. It doesn't hit me how it's hitting y'all. I earned this. That's all I know," said Ridley when asked why he deserved the $92 million payday from Tennessee. The 29-year-old also made it clear that age was just a number for him.

"I'm 29 on paper, but I'm probably like 25 for real. The two years off did help, but I'm probably like 25 years old in real life. Y'all gonna see. I can run with the youngest. I can run all day," Ridley told me.

Make no mistake about it. Calvin Ridley has competitive fire. He loves football and always has. He's going to be a positive force in the Titans locker room and someone that is always going to keep it real with the fans.

In the same way that A.J. captured the heart of every Titans fan, I see Ridley doing the same – especially if (and when) he takes his game to the next level with a year under his belt of getting back up to speed.

Ridley is not A.J. Brown. He's a different guy and a different player with a different story. But he has the same "it factor" that will make him an instant star in Music City. Fans will connect with him, root for him, and buy the No. 0 jerseys until they're out of stock.

As he shared on Friday, Ridley needed a fresh start. In a lot of ways, Titans fans did too. There are a lot of wounds that still exist from the Robinson-Vrabel era. Too many memories of what could have been that make it difficult to see the light at the end of the tunnel. Like ending a long-term relationship when you really thought this was "the one." But I think Ridley's authenticity is exactly what Nashville has been needing.
