Former All Pro safety Kevin Byard was released by the Philadelphia Eagles on Friday. The move might seem somewhat surprising given the team just traded fifth and sixth round picks in addition to safety Terrell Edmunds to acquire him last October.
Byard's contract was a point of interest in recent weeks as it was clear that the team either needed to restructure his deal or release him given the minimal cap penalty for doing so.
Adam Schefter shared the news, as the move became official early this afternoon.
Kevin Byard was due to make over $14 million this year, which would have made him the 10th highest paid safety in the league. The Eagles apparently did not think he was worth that dollar figure, so in a move that saves them over $13 million against the cap for 2024 they decided to move on.
However, the Philadelphia Eagles' loss may be the Tennessee Titans' gain! Byard spent the first full seven years of his career (and part of last fall) playing for Tennessee. He posted two All Pro seasons (2017 and 2021) as a Titan, tallying more than 600 total tackles and picking off opposing quarterbacks 27 times in his time in Nashville.
Now that he's on the market again the Titans could bring back one of their greatest players ever to bolster a somewhat inexperienced secondary. It makes all the sense in the world for both sides. Byard went to school at Middle Tennessee and has all sorts of local ties.
Expect the Titans to make their move quickly for Byard when free agency opens up in less than two weeks.
