NFL free agency kicked off today, and for the Dallas Cowboys that means it kicks off in anywhere from one week to two weeks from now.
The Cowboys are notorious bargain bin shoppers when it comes to free agency. They will let their players go to division rivals, while they sit on their hands and from an outside appearance, do nothing.
That is exactly what happened in Day 1 of this year's free agency frenzy.
Besides losing some players to their division rivals, the Cowboys are losing their starting running back to the Tennessee Titans.
Pollard isn't the only running back on the Cowboys roster in free agency either.
Backup Rico Dowdle is also on the open market, but with other top names at the position also on the market, I expect his potential buyers to give some time before making a move.
For those keeping score at home, with Pollard on a new team and Dowdle in the open market, that leaves three players at running back on the Cowboys active roster.
Deuce Vaughn, Malik Davis, and Snoop Conner are the names that are currently on roster, and between the three of them they have four years of playing experience and 73 total carries.
The Cowboys need to add some help at running back.
Many are hoping for Derrick Henry to come to Dallas in what would be a comedic swap of players, but the reality is, the Cowboys won't sign a player unless he fits their terms.
With the Cowboys already being burned on a running back from Henry's draft class, you can assume their offer would be quite low.
One thing you can absolutely take away from the news is this…
The Cowboys will add a running back at some point during the draft.
We already discussed this in a previous article, but the recent news further solidifies this statement.
Jane Slater on NFL Network this morning had this to say about the Cowboys running back situation.
"I've been told they're very high on Jonathan Brooks from Texas. He would likely be a second round pick for you."
She would go on to say the interest in Derrick Henry and Austin Ekeler is "fake news."
We have already discussed my thoughts on taking Jonathan Brooks in the second, and we gave alternatives. It's beginning to seem like the Cowboys might not be done with just adding one running back however.
The Cowboys will add a veteran running back in free agency.
With the running backs on roster combining for less than 100 total carries, even by adding a player in the draft you do not help that total. Thus it makes me believe they will turn to the veteran market for some much needed experience.
Some names I would look for the Cowboys to be interested in, in the next wave of free agency are:
- Zack Moss
- AJ Dillon
- Aaron Jones
Rolling into the 2024 NFL season with less than 100 carriers in total from your running backs is a bold strategy, and frankly one I don't think they will go with.
Sean Payton can help the Dallas Cowboys make Dak Prescott’s life a lot easier in 2024
The Cowboys should strike while the iron is hot.
