The New England Patriots have brought in another running back.

NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reports that the Patriots intend to sign former Washington Commanders running back Antonio Gibson.

The Patriots were in need of additional depth behind running back Rhamondre Stevenson since Ezekiel Elliott is set to be a free agent. And Gibson is who they are turning to.

MassLive's Mark Daniels added that the deal is reportedly for three years.

The past two seasons have seen a decrease for Gibson, but his first two years with the Commanders were impressive. And in 2021, he finished with 258 carries for 1,037 rushing yards and seven rushing touchdowns. He also had 294 receiving yards and three receiving touchdowns that year.

Last season specifically, he rushed for 265 yards on 65 carries with a touchdown along with 389 receiving yards and two touchdowns on 48 catches.

Gibson was drafted by the Commanders in the third round of the 2020 NFL Draft. And this is the first time he will play for another team. So instead of the NFC East, he will play in the AFC East now.

Along with Gibson and Stevenson, the Patriots have Kevin Harris and JaMycal Hasty on the roster. Ke’Shawn Vaughn was also signed to a future contract.

The legal tampering period of free agency began at 12 p.m. ET on Monday.
