The New England Patriots plan to sign tight end Austin Hooper to a 1-year deal worth up to $4.25 million, NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reports.
ESPN's Mike Reiss adds that the contract has a base value of $3 million, but he can earn up to $4.25 million.
He joins Hunter Henry on the depth chart.
This comes just a day after the Patriots lost tight end Mike Gesicki to the Cincinnati Bengals on a 1-year, $3.25 million deal.
Hooper worked with new Patriots offensive coordinator Alex Van Pelt during his two seasons with the Cleveland Browns in 2020 and 2021. And he made enough of an impression that Van Pelt wanted to bring him to his new team.
The tight end is a two-time Pro Bowler, having breakout seasons with the Atlanta Falcons in 2018 and 2019. The Falcons were the team to first take a chance on Hooper, selecting him in the third round of the 2016 NFL Draft.
After his time with the Falcons and the Browns, he had a stint with the Tennessee Titans for the 2022 season and then joined the Las Vegas Raiders last year.
With the Raiders last season, Hooper finished with 25 receptions for 234 yards and no touchdowns. However, across his entire career, he has 364 receptions for 3,702 yards and 25 touchdowns.
