In what is a pretty big surprise, Ohio State is losing an assistant coach to the school they could not afford to.
Running backs coach Tony Alford is reportedly heading to Michigan for the same job. He is said to have already informed Ohio State officials that he is leaving.
As if losing three straight times wasn’t enough, Ohio State takes another loss here to Michigan. Alford had been with the program since 2015 coaching the running back position, as well as holding titles of run game coordinator and assistant head coach at times.
Ohio State has TreVeyon Henderson returning who decided to with-go the 2024 NFL Draft and remain with the Buckeyes for his senior season. Also, the Buckeyes went out and landed the top transfer running back with Quinshon Jedkins now a part of the program.
Making a lateral move for the same job title is not something you see all that often and it is not something that you see coaches do between rivals. Alford was born in Akron and played college ball at Colorado State before holding numerous coaching jobs with teams like Kent State, Iowa State, Washington, Louisville, and Notre Dame.
Ohio State will now have to find their next running backs coach during spring ball likely not something they felt like they had to do.
