The San Francisco 49ers have done an excellent job finding young stars at safety, and they could be about to add another to the mix.

Per Jordan Schultz of Bleacher Report, the 49ers are hosting former Indianapolis Colts safety Julian Blackmon on a free agent visit.

Blackmon is coming off a career year with the Colts, and was one of three players I identified as potential targets for the 49ers after it emerged they were looking to add at safety.

In 2023, he recorded eight pass breakups and four interceptions, both of which served as career highs. He also registered a career-high five tackles for loss.

Those numbers were a result of some excellent play in coverage. Blackmon allowed a completion on just 11 of his 22 targets for just 130 yards. His passer rating against of 28.8 was the best in the NFL among safeties with at least 20 targets.

The fifth best safety in the NFL by Expected Points Added allowed per target, Blackmon is a dynamic playmaker who, at 25, arguably still has his best football ahead of him.

Blackmon would be potentially critical extra help at a position where their depth is shakier than it seems.

San Francisco's top pick from last year, Ji'Ayir Brown, enjoyed an impressive rookie season after stepping into the breach following 2022 All-Pro Talanoa Hufanga's ACL injury. Brown had two interceptions in the regular season and another in 49ers' Super Bowl 58 defeat.

With no sign of veteran Tashaun Gipson, who flirted with retirement last offseason, returning for another year, Brown and Hufanga would right now be the starters.

However, with the 49ers' current backup options limited to veteran Erik Harris and special teamer George Odum, they could clearly benefit from more insurance to protect against Hufanga struggling on his return from injury and Brown potentially enduring a sophomore slump.

Blackmon would provide that and then some, offering the 49ers the ability to diversify things in the secondary through the use of more three-safety looks.

At his age and with his recent production, Blackmon should not still be on the open market, and there's no reason for the 49ers to let him leave the building without a contract.
