It appears as though some folks really didn't watch the Miami Dolphins play all that much this past season, and it shows when they open their mouths to speak on the Dolphins.
Nick Wright, co-host of "First Things First" on FS1, pegs the Dolphins as a team who should be looking to move on from their quarterback.
Following up in the shoes of fellow Fox Sports media member Joel Klatt, who pegged the Dolphins as a team who should be looking at drafting Michael Penix instead of extending Tagovailoa, Wright said that he would suggest trading the Dolphins' star quarterback to Minnesota in exchange for picks that would allow them to draft a new quarterback.
"You (Minnesota) can have stability at the quarterback position, maybe quiet Justin Jefferson's fears," Wright said. "And we don't have to keep tearing down – Miami is already in minor teardown of the roster without having paid Tua. You can reset the clock and up maybe the upside of the quarterback.
"Because they haven't paid him, he's incredibly tradeable. Like any of these other quarterbacks who have already been paid, trading them is so painful."
Of course, he's dead wrong about a quarterback who hasn't been paid being incredibly tradeable. If anything, it's going to back teams off until his contract demands are known. Otherwise, as co-host Chris Broussard noted, he's basically a one-year rental, as Tagovailoa will be playing on his fifth-year option from his rookie deal next season.
Wright is also way off on the Dolphins' roster being in minor teardown mode. Indeed, the Dolphins lost Christian Wilkins and Robert Hunt to nine-figure contracts that, honestly, would have been insane and crippling for the Dolphins to try to match. Xavien Howard wasn't worth the price tag for 2024. Wilkins hurts, and moving on from Howard leaves a hole to fill, but the other starters/key role players leaving town are Andrew Van Ginkel, Brandon Jones, and DeShon Elliott. Aside from Wilkins, none of those are irreplaceable next year through free agency or the draft.
The Dolphins also did a nice job answering some significant roster questions with players like Kendall Fuller, Jordan Poyer, Aaron Brewer, Jordyn Brooks, and Shaq Barrett. Things look far less dire than they did after the first day or two of free agency. So to say they're in minor teardown mode is simply wrong.
For those wanting Tagovailoa to get shipped out of town this offseason, well, you know what they say about hoping in one hand. Translation: don't, regardless of what those who apparently want to speak it into existence might say.
