Early in the offseason Ohio State had quite the whirlwind for their offensive coaching staff.

The Buckeyes welcomed Bill O’Brien to be the offensive coordinator but he ended up landing the job with Boston College to be their head coach. So that was a brief stint that left Ohio State looking for a new coordinator.

Ohio State landed on Chip Kelly to be that guy, who was still the coach at UCLA when he left for the job in Columbus. Earlier in the week, Kelly shared with reporters why he wanted to make the switch.

"I just want to be happy," Kelly told reporters. "I'm really happy to be coaching a position. I'm really happy at this place. It'd take a really special place for me to leave UCLA."

Kelly is coaching quarterbacks along with his duties as the offensive coordinator. Ryan Day gave up play-calling duties to Kelly so that he can take an approach from the bigger picture.

"As a head coach, you sit in on position meetings, but you always get pulled out," Kelly explained. "There is other things that are involved with being a head coach. I think it's more of a CEO operation right now. The job and the landscape of college football, as we all know have changed."

Kelly was the head coach of the Bruins from 2018 through the 2023 season. He went 35-34 in his time at UCLA.

"I love those players and I love that coaching staff," Kelly said of his time at UCLA. "But to be here with Ryan, who I have a great relationship with, I've known him since he was a little kid. So I think a lot of things just fell into place."

Kelly knew exactly when it felt like he needed to make a change and find somewhere where he could be more involved with actual coaching.

"It started when we were preparing for our bowl game. Ryan Gunderson, who's a great quarterbacks coach, left to go to Oregon State as a coordinator, so he wasn't there. So I actually coached the quarterbacks for the bowl game.

"I had started to think, ‘I haven't actually coached a position since 2008.' I think my wife remarked, 'I haven't seen you this happy in a long time.' To me, the best part of football is football. So, you've got to do football and not do some of the things involved with what a head coach does."

Now, Kelly is going to lead an offense that will likely have transfer Will Howard at the helm with TreVeyon Henderson and Quinshon Judkins in the backfield. Ohio State will once again be loaded at wide receiver with Emeka Egbuka, Carnell Tate, Brandon Inniss, and Jeremiah Smith out there.

If Kelly wants fun, that may be just what he gets in Columbus this fall.
