The Denver Broncos recently cut ties with Russell Wilson, two years after they traded for him, and gave him a massive contract extension before even watching him play a snap. A smart move would be for the Las Vegas Raiders to get Wilson on a veteran minimum.
The first year Wilson was with the Broncos, it was terrible. They finished with the worst offense in football, but much of that could have been put on Nathaniel Hackett's shoulders. Then, last year, the Broncos were nearly a playoff team, and Wilkson played well. He was a top 15-20 quarterback in the league.
He could be the Raiders' bridge quarterback if they cannot get the first-round quarterback they want in the NFL draft. Maybe they can do what the Kansas City Chiefs did with Patrick Mahomes and draft a quarterback but sit him behind Wilson for a year. If Wilson is on veteran minimum, it allows you to have that much more cap space to make your roster better and still have a pretty good quarterback.
We know that Wilson's camp wants him in Las Vegas. However, does Wilson want to be there? If the Raiders were to do this very smart idea, they would have competition in getting Wilson.
According to NFL insider Ian Rapoport of NFL Network, Wilson was recently seen at the Newark Airport in New Jersey after visiting with the New York Giants and is now visiting with the Pittsburgh Steelers.
Those teams could also use somewhat of a bridge quarterback, but the Raiders may be able to put together the best case for Wilson. They are close to winning and have the best offensive weapons out of the bunch, along with probably the best offensive line. It will certainly be something we should continue to watch.
