The Denver Broncos have made a necessary move to retain one of their top remaining veteran leaders.

According to 9News reporter Mike Klis, the Broncos agreed to a reworked one-year deal for WR Tim Patrick. The 30-year-old was under contract for the 2024 NFL season with a $9.5 million base salary, but that number was not guaranteed. The restructured contract will lower his $15.5M 2024 cap number in an amicable way for both the team and the player.

The reason a lower cap number is needed for Patrick is that he's been injury-prone for the past two seasons. He suffered season-ending injuries in each of the last two years, failing to play a meaningful snap of football during those two years.

He did show promise in the two seasons before the injuries. In 2020 and 2021, Patrick amassed 104 catches for 1,476 yards and 11 touchdowns. Broncos GM George Paton is making a calculated bet that Patrick can return to form in 2024, and they'll need him to do so if rumors regarding a Jerry Jeudy trade and Courtland Sutton release are true.
