The Tennessee Titans will enter the 2024 season with former Kentucky Wildcats standout Will Levis as their starting quarterback.
Levis had a promising rookie season in 2023 after taking over for an injured Ryan Tannehill.
Speaking of Tannehill, he's played his last snap for the Titans. That leaves Malik Willis as the top backup option for Tennessee entering the offseason.
Willis, however, has failed to impress in limited opportunities with the Titans after getting selected in the third round of the 2022 NFL Draft.
ESPN NFL insider Jeremy Fowler thinks the Titans will sign a quarterback this offseason to serve as the primary backup to Levis.
And Fowler thinks that quarterback could be a player that's already very familiar with new Titans head coach Brian Callahan.
"Tennessee will likely sign a backup but might go with a second-wave passer. Brandon Allen — a former Brian Callahan disciple — is a candidate," noted Fowler on Sunday.
Allen spent the 2023 season with the San Francisco 49ers. Before his time in San Francisco, Allen spent three seasons with the Cincinnati Bengals (2020 to 2022) where he played under Callahan, who was the offensive coordinator in Cincy during those seasons. Allen started five games for the Bengals in 2020 after Joe Burrow tore his ACL.
Backup quarterbacks often act as an extension of the coaching staff. And Allen would be the perfect candidate for the Titans. The former Arkansas quarterback isn't a player that's going to be a regular starting quarterback in the NFL. He understands that his role in the NFL is as a backup.
Allen's understanding of Callahan's offense combined with his status as a "non-threatening" backup quarterback makes him the perfect option to serve as a mentor to Levis in 2024.
