Indy GM Chris Ballard made a puzzling decision to waive 2023 fifth-round draft pick Darius Rush. They exposed him to waivers and now they're paying the price.
This 6-foot-2 and 198-pound cornerback out of South Carolina was a riser during the pre-draft process. He performed admirably for the Colts during the preseason, but they also had standout performances from Jaylon Jones and Tony Brown, who made the 53-man roster over Rush.
The Chiefs, who were last in the waiver priority order, claimed Rush on Wednesday. It's not yet clear the corresponding move. K.C. also had undrafted rookie CB Kahlef Hailassie claimed by the Cleveland Browns.
The decision to claim Rush gives Kansas City another young cornerback on a rookie deal for the next four seasons. He'll join the likes of Trent McDuffie, Jaylen Watson, Joshua Williams, Nazeeh Johnson (IR), and Nic Jones as the team goes through a big-time youth movement at the cornerback position.
This could be notable with injuries to L'Jarius Sneed and Nic Jones, so keep an eye out for a possible corresponding move that sends one of the two players to injured reserve. It certainly doesn't bode well for Sneed's long-term future with the team as he's set to become an unrestricted free agent following the 2023 NFL season.
