Despite all the ups and downs for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers over the past two decades, the one point of consistency has been the handful of top-tier, All-Pro, Hall of Fame-caliber players that have kept the franchise from slipping into the point of irrelevance.
Ronde Barber was the big piece that carried the torch from that first Super Bowl to Lavonte David and Mike Evans, and David and Evans were able to carry the franchise through Super Bowl number two.
Say what you want about the franchise, but the ability to find players like this has been special. David and Evans are the faces of the Buccaneers right now, but it seems like that may only go on for so much longer for the best offensive player in franchise history.
After an offseason of a bit of uncertainty, one that had a mountain of silly trade rumors regarding the Buccaneers and Mike Evans, it now seems like the end of the Evans era could be on us sooner than anticipated.
Rick Stroud of the Tampa Bay Times reported tonight that the extension talks between Evans and the Bucs have stopped moving forward, and that is probably the last thing that Buccaneers fans wanted to hear.
During a time of so much upheaval, good players were going to leave Tampa, but having to come to grips with the fact that Evans could be leaving with time left in his Hall of Fame career should make Bucs fans sick, even if it is the only move to make with the cap space.
Frankly, Evans has likely earned a blank check from the Buccaneers for sticking with the team as long as he has, but that is an argument for a different day.
Regardless, this does not look like a good bit of news running into crunch time for a final deal to get worked out to prevent the unthinkable from happening.
There is still time, but the sand in the hour glass is moving a bit too quickly for this Buccaneer fan. Tampa needs to find a way to fix this before it comes back to haunt them.
Buccaneers WR Mike Evans reportedly in line for another big payday
Pewter Report’s Scott Reynolds recently reported the Buccaneers are going to give Evans an extension this summer.
