The Dallas Cowboys will kick off their 2023 NFL season against the New York Giants on Sunday Night Football, a recognizable scenario for two franchises that have faced each other in the primetime slot of Week 1 four times since 2007.
When the game starts, all eyes will be on quarterback Dak Prescott. All offseason, we've talked about the starting quarterback taking on a new offense and what will happen with his high number of interceptions from last year.
But Prescott will also be seeking history as he can etch his name in the Cowboys' and NFL's record books on the same night.
- With 53 passing yards, Prescott will become the second quarterback in NFL history to reach 25,000 career passing yards and 1,500 rushing yards in their first 100 career games. The only other one to ever do it is future Hall of Famer Aaron Rodgers.
The above numbers, courtesy of the Cowboys' PR team, are more meaningful than first meets the eye. In the NFL, there are many dual-threat quarterbacks but few who are as good of a passer as Dak currently is.
A top-10 quarterback in the league, Prescott could be even more dangerous if the coaching staff decides to use his legs a little bit more. But understandably, there is some risk involved. We'll see if McCarthy wants to access more of Prescott's dual-threat skills in 2023.
- With a win on Sunday, Prescott will tie Danny White for the fourth-most wins (62) among Cowboys quarterbacks.
Time really does fly. It feels like just yesterday we were arguing about whether or not Prescott was the starter over Tony Romo. Now, Prescott is entering his eighth year in the NFL and slowly becoming one of the most important quarterbacks in team history.
Of course, Dak and the Cowboys aren't all that worried about getting those regular season wins but rather those in the playoffs. But if anything, this number goes to show Prescott's longevity as a Cowboys starter with many more years ahead in his career.
