Former Tennessee Vols wide receiver Jalin Hyatt has heard plenty of comments about his route running abilities despite his status as the 2022 Biletnikoff Award winner.
Hyatt, a third round selection by the New York Giants in the 2023 NFL Draft, had his route running abilities questioned ad nauseam during the pre-draft process.
Most of the criticism had nothing to do with Hyatt's tape. Instead, it surfaced because of Tennessee's offense, which likes to create one-on-one matchups for its receivers.
Hyatt performed extremely well during training camp and preseason action, silencing most of the critics that questioned his abilities when he was coming out of Tennessee.
Still, Hyatt finds himself answering a question about his route running abilities every now and then. That was the case during Hyatt's recent appearance on "Breaking Big Blue with Jordan Raanan".
Hyatt was asked if he's running different routes than he ran at Tennessee and if anything about the new routes with the Giants has been difficult.
"I've definitely been, from Tennessee to here, [there's] definitely been a difference," said Hyatt. "A lot of different concepts, different routes that we run. Tennessee was a little more vertical, but, you know, I'm loving it here. Learning how to run certain routes and looking at guys in front of me. Looking at guys that we see on film and just try to get tips from them, try to learn from them. We have a great receiver room, great experience, and just leaders in the room. So it's been fun, but at the same time, I'm definitely still learning."
The Giants use some similar concepts as Tennessee. But at the same time, it's a different offense with different terminology, and different coaches.
Ultimately, the NFL is an adjustment for every single receiver that enters the league — regardless of where they played college football. And it sounds like Hyatt is making that adjustment just fine.
