It certainly wasn't the ideal first game of the season for quarterback Justin Fields and head coach Matt Eberflus.
The Chicago Bears (0-1) started off with a strong start but quickly fell behind and let the game get out of reach in the second-half. The result was a disappointing 38-20 loss in the home opener against the Green Bay Packers (1-0).
"I think we had a rhythm starting off early, but, I think kind of the moral of the story is that we shot ourselves in the foot so many times," Fields said while speaking to reporters after the game. "We definitely got to put ourselves in a better position."
Eberflus shared the similar reaction to the home opening loss and noted that team team just needs to get back to the "basics of football." The Bears finished the game with seven total penalties, two turnovers, and recorded zero takeaways on defense.
"All the guys in there are sick to their stomachs, all the coaches and everybody and that's not something that you like," Eberflus said. "But, we also know it's the first game and we got to get better and we have to improve."
Chicago's offense showcased some inspiring plays in the first-half but weren’t able to regain the steam coming out of the locker room. The defense was equally at fault, allowing the Packers to score 28 points after halftime.
Sunday's loss was also a disappointing debut for wide receiver DJ Moore. Moore's addition was expected to boost the Bears' passing game, however, the unit only managed a modest 189-yards through the air. The team's top option in that department was held to just two receptions for 25-yards on only two targets.
"[Moore's] time is going to come, just kind of how the chips fall," Fields explained. "He's not gonna go for 100 [yards] every game of course, I wish he did, but that's just not how it's gonna happen. He's gonna get more touches for sure."
The Bears will need to get the ship steered back in the right direction and will have the opportunity to. Chicago’s third-year quarterback understands that the season is just beginning and that it's going to be a long road ahead.
"In the grand scheme of things you have to look at the bigger picture," Fields said. "It's Week 1. We have 16 games to go in the regular season. So, we have a lot of room to improve, a lot of room to grow, and I think that's what we're gonna do. As long as we keep that positive attitude, keep just our mentality, and keep pushing for greatness each and every day we’ll be fine. It definitely hurts not only because it's the first game of the season and its a loss, but it’s a loss to them."
The Bears will have a full week to reevaluate the film before they get set to travel to Tampa Bay to take on the Buccaneers (1-0) next Sunday.
Packers ‘choice’ blew the doors off the Bears in Week 1
Packers HC Matt LaFleur made a gutsy call and it paid off in a huge way against the Bears.
