It was a forgettable – or maybe an unforgettable – way for the New York Giants to open the 2023 NFL season. After months of anticipation, the Giants were ran out of its own building in a 40-0 blowout defeat to the Dallas Cowboys.

That was not the way that the season was supposed to begin. Not after the Giants made the playoffs and advanced in the postseason just last year. Losing to the Cowboys would have been understandable, but not in that embarrassing fashion that occurred on Sunday Night Football for a national audience to see.

So now there is a major question that the Giants have been hit with: can New York realistically compete in the NFC East? Is the team good enough to belong on the same field as the rival Cowboys and Philadelphia Eagles?

That is a legitimate question and concern thus far in the early stages of the Brian Daboll era in New York. Because the Giants have lost all five of the games that they have played versus those two opponents over last season and through week one of this year.

"It's embarrassing, but it's over with now," safety Xavier McKinney said after the Cowboys loss. "We have to put that one to rest," safety Xavier McKinney said. "It happened. So obviously you have to embrace it a little bit. You have to understand, 'Where do you go from here?' That's what it is for us now."

Running back Saquon Barkley understands the questions that will be aimed towards his Giants team. But he's more worried about what is immediately ahead while also welcoming the next opportunity that he gets against the Cowboys.

"Yeah, that's what the reaction is going to be. Like I said, it's a long season," Barkley said. "I'm not too focused on the Eagles. I'm really focused more on Arizona, and the beauty is we get to see Dallas again. We have to go there in a tough environment. I'm not really worried about that gap. They got us. They came in and got the better of us."

The New York Giants won't get the chance to answer that major question coming out of week one until the team matches up with the Cowboys on November 12. They won't play the Eagles until December.

Which means there is a lot of time until the Giants can get the bad taste out of its mouth.
