The Dallas Cowboys flat-out demolished the New York Giants on Sunday night football in Week 1.
Despite the Cowboys' historic win, for a brief moment, there was a moment of agony among fans.
It came as a result of the position that has plagued the Cowboys for the better part of the past decade: The kicker.
After the Cowboys blocked a field goal attempt by the Giants and returned it over 50 yards (something they hadn't done in over 15 years), first-year player Brandon Aubrey would step up for the point after attempt.
He would miss. This familiar sight would be a gut punch to all of Cowboys nation.
Not just because the Cowboys couldn't cap off a touchdown that was scored in such a rare fashion for the team, but more so because the position has been a reoccurring issue for this team. This had us wondering…
How many points have the Cowboys left on the field because of kicking woes?
Since 2020 the Cowboys are at 86% in terms of their field goal percentage, and 89% on point after attempts. The field goal percentage puts them in a three-way tie for 12th. Not great but also far from terrible. Their extra point percentage is where the problem lies: An 89% mark puts them in a three-way tie for 29th in the NFL.
Since 2020, the Cowboys have left 66 points on the field with missed kicks.
That's a fair share of points. However, hope is not lost on Aubrey.
To his credit, Brandon Aubrey bounced back, even making another point after attempt after a situation where he would be asked to come on and kick suddenly. Special Teams coach John Fassel remains optimistic about him and even gave a reasonable explanation as to why the kick was missed. Therefore, it should be fair to reserve judgment on him.
