If you looked at Bryce Young's preseason by the numbers, you wouldn't be blown away.
The Carolina Panthers franchise quarterback has completed seven of his 12 passing attempts while compiling 56 yards. Young has played 32 snaps and hasn't thrown a touchdown pass. It has been a very average preseason showing. And recently, Young revealed he isn't worried about the lack of offensive opportunity. Instead, he acknowledges that what he is experiencing is by design.
“This is by design,” Young said. "I trust the coaches wholeheartedly in their approach, what they’re doing in play calling and everything."
The good news is that Young has one more chance to show what he can do before the games actually matter.
Panthers head coach Frank Reich explained that he will most likely play the starters against the Detroit Lions Friday.
It is a finale that gives the Panthers coaching staff one more chance to look at the live offense and figure out solutions to get the ball moving downfield.
So what is Young hoping to work on in the last game of the season? The technicalities of the game.
"I think really just continuin’ to grow and the ownership of the playbook and command of the huddle and things of that nature," Young said. "And then just being more efficient with execution, with where my eyes wanna be—pre and post-snap. Makin’ sure it’s a smooth operation from a ball-handling standpoint, cadence, footwork, all those sorts of things.
"Just fine-tuning that and trying to keep pushing that and not being complacent.”
Clearly, Young and the Panthers are hoping the last preseason game goes vastly different from how the first two games have gone. If they do, it will show his commitment to improvement isn't just talk, it is design.
