The Kansas City Chiefs have had some great preseason moments so far. Sure, the records don't mean anything, but the play we see from some of the guys fighting for a roster spot has been awesome.
One of those guys, in particular, is quarterback Shane Buechele, who some people think has played his way into the argument for the backup quarterback spot. And I'd go as far as to say he won that backup spot.
All of that, though, comes from the work he has done behind the scenes.
Chiefs' Shane Buechele has been working behind the scenes
Buechele has been on the Chiefs since 2021; however, he has been on the practice squad for the majority of it. Buechele has yet to see the field in the regular season. And, while we hope he doesn't because that would mean something happened to Patrick Mahomes, I trust that he could play well.
In 2021 and 2022, I did not have that same feeling. In fact, I didn't think Buechele was really that good. But he has shown in these last two preseason games that he has some skill; he's just been developing it and working behind the scenes.
"It's been really neat watching him grow coming in last year and not knowing him. Just seeing where he's been as a player and as a person, learning this offense has certainly helped to be in that room with Pat (Patrick Mahomes)," offensive coordinator Matt Nagy said. "Now I mean the offseason, the preseason games are all about opportunities. (Head) Coach (Andy Reid) has a great way of going through those types of battles at all positions, and I think the competition brings out the best in everybody, and you see that with Shane (Buechele).
"He got a chance last week to do that, and he goes in and plays well. You love being able to see guys have success when behind the scenes they put it in all this work, and they do all the stuff behind the scenes in practice, all last couple years and now to get an opportunity, he's played well."
That is why the Chiefs have kept him around the last few years, as they saw Buechele's potential. Now he is showing it, as he has made crazy play after crazy play in the preseason. Last game, he went 10/10 for 105 yards and some pretty crazy plays.
Buechele is putting in the work, and it's definitely paying off. He may have just earned his spot on the 53-man roster.
Do the Chiefs have a quarterback controversy brewing?
The Kansas City Chiefs changed up their quarterback rotation in preseason Week 2, leading to some speculation about the backup job.
