This week is essentially the last week of training camp for the Detroit Lions. There's one more practice on Wednesday and then the Lions play their final preseason game on Friday against the Carolina Panthers. Yet, there's still a camp battle going on right now.

Yeah, camp battles are usually a thing that you think about as being something that happens at the start of camp and is decided by the end, but this one could come down to the wire. I'm talking about the final receiver spot and the battle between two undrafted receivers vying to get that spot.

Oregon receiver Chase Cota is taking on Eastern Michigan receiver Dylan Drummond. Let's dive into this a bit and look at both the reason why and the reasons why not for both players.

Chase Cota

Why: Cota has been pretty good during the preseason. It’s clear that Nate Sudfeld trusts Cota, because he seemed to target him a lot in both games. He got targeted 12 times and caught six balls for 69 yards and a touchdown. Cota showed that he can go up and get the ball and that he’s able to do some things once he grabs it. Cota also brings a size at 6-foot-4 that the Lions just don’t have.

Why not: Here's the thing, Cota just hasn't got the reps that Drummond has gotten during training camp. I'm not sure how that effects things in the end. Plus while Cota has the size, he lacks the speed that Drummond can bring to the table. Speed helps in the special teams world.

Why: It’s clear that the Lions coaching staff seems to like Drummond. Even if the heat on him has cooled down pretty dramatically in the past week. Drummond was rising up the depth chart during camp and the Lions were trying to plug him in at return man after Justin Jackson’s retirement. Usually when you’re getting plugged into spots, it’s because a team is trying to find a spot for you. Drummond also brings that speed we were talking about and he’s the kind of guy that will layout for a catch.

Why not: Drummond just had a rough go in both preseason games. he got targeted nine times and only caught four passes. Some of those missed targets were on Drummond. He couldn't make the contested catch. That's something you need to be able to do in the NFL. Plus, his shot at returning the ball didn't look so good and the Lions didn't even try it in the second game.

My pick: Chase Cota

I have to go with Cota at the end of the day simply because the Lions don’t seem to have a a big bodied receiver that can go up and get it like Cota can. There’s a chance that the Lions go with six receivers and bring in Antione Green, but that’s not looking like it’s going to be the case at this point. So I have to go with Cota. I don’t think Drummond goes far though. He’ll definitely wind up on the Lions practice squad. Actually, either of these guys are headed to the practice squad if the other gets picked. That’s if they clear waivers of course.
