The Detroit Lions surprised some, mostly just me, when the drafted Tennessee quarterback Hendon Hooker in the third round of the 2023 NFL Draft.

One of the big things that was a concern to me, besides his age, was that he would miss his entire rookie season with the Lions and we wouldn't actually see anything out of him until 2024. While part of that is still true, it looks like Hooker will actually be a part of the Lions roster a lot sooner than we initially thought.

Lions beat writer Dave Birkett of the Detroit Free Press reported this week that the Lions are planning to add Hooker to the Lions 53 man roster once he's healthy.

What does that mean for the Lions at the end of the day? The big things are that Hooker is going to be able to take part in practices and really learn the Lions playbook. He'll also be able to get on the field mentoring form Jared Goff and Teddy Bridgewater.

This all really gives Hooker a chance to hit the ground running once he gets a chance to be on the field during the preseason next year. It also allows the team to not have to wait for Hooker to catch up on things.

Does it effect the Lions roster right away? Possibly. There's been some talk about the idea of the Lions going into the season with three quarterbacks. If they do that, it'll be an easier for the Lions to integrate Hooker into the roster later on. They can move on from Sudfeld and not have to worry about dropping a player from another position. Then again, that does affect the Lions bringing in a player from another position now.

Either way, Hooker joining the Lions roster this year is a good thing. Just don't expect him to see the field during the regular season. Even if Goff gets hurt, Teddy Bridgewater will still be here.
